GUJRANWALA: Police created hurdles at GT Road in order not to let MMA caravan marching towards Gujrat Thursday to protest against the passage of Women Protection Bill, while rally leader Qazi Hussain Ahmed was sent back to Islamabad after keeping him in custody for a while and tens of MMA activists were arrested from Gujranwala, Hafizabad and Gujrat.
Talking to Geo News Qazi Hussain Ahmed said that the MMA caravan was first stopped at Mansoorah but he was able to move away from the cordon and addressed a public meeting at Gujranwala.
Qazi said that he was leading the rally to Gujrat but the police have plugged all roads to the city. Heavy contingents of police have been deployed over there, so the caravan was returned back from Gujrat Bridge.
He said that the government was inviting violence by stopping the peaceful protest.
Earlier, heavy contingents of Lahore Police cordoned off the Jammat-i-Islami headquarters in Mansoorah and detained Liaquat Baloch, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, Farid Paracha and other leaders and workers in Lahore.
MMA had announced to hold Lahore to Gujrat march to demand resignation of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.
Police were deployed Wednesday outside the Jamaat-i-Islami headquarters in Mansoorah. All roads leading to Mansoorah were closed with barriers and barbed wires on Thursday morning.
Heavy police contingents were also deployed outside Punjab University, Wahdat Science College and other colleges of the city.
According to police spokesman, Section 144 was imposed in Punjab and heavy contingents of police have been deployed to maintain law and order in the province.
